How to make your own washing powder

Making your own washing powder is easy. The process involves three steps.1)Go to the shops and buy a bar of environmentally friendly soap, washing soda, borax if you use it, vinegar2)Get a big bowl, a rasping board (cheese grater will do), a whisk. 3)Prepare mentally for spending ten minutes in your kitchen doing nothing but grating a bar of soap.

step 1;

Take the bar of soap you have purchased to your kitchen table. The best soap is of course ecologically friendly soap. To know what is a good ecologically friendly soap, check that it's made of vegetable based fat, that it is not tested on animals and that it is 100% bio degradable. My favorite type of soap is Castile Soap. My second favorite soap is Sunlight Soap, but I have yet to find the evidence that this is not tested on animals. Sunlight soap is the stuff your grandmother used to wash her clothes. It was introduced in the US at around 80 years ago and it got a bad name because the product was marketed in bright yellow packaging. This resembled an instant drink and tonnes and tonnes of yanks found themselves making, then sniffing, then DRINKING the soap! OK. Get your grate out. It is of course best to pulverize the bar of soap as best as you can. But the process can be tedious, so a rough guide is that the whole bar of soap should not take you longer than around ten minutes of hard work grating. If you have a kitchen blender and want to use it, you can do that too, but don't blame me for soaping up your food if you don't manage to clean this thing afterwards. .

step 2:

Making Homemade Laundry Soap

Making your own laundry soap is very easy! No longer do you need to rely on store bought detergents. With a few ingredients on hand you will be able to make batch after batch of laundry soap. The cost savings by doing this is incredible!

You will need 3 basic ingredients; a soap of some sort, washing soda and borax.

The Soap: The most typical type of soap to use is Fels Naptha. It is an old-fashioned type of soap usually found in the laundry aisle. The other options for soap are Ivory or another brand called, Zote. Any of these will work. I use my own homemade soap and find it works quite well and If you use Ivory or your own homemade soap you will need to use the whole bar.

Washing Soda: This is not to be confused with baking soda. They are not the same thing. Washing soda is sodium carbonate or soda ash (baking soda is sodium bicarbonate). It is a white powder. Its purpose is to help remove dirt and orders. The brand to look for is Arm & Hammer Washing Soda. I find it in the laundry section of my grocery store. Many people have a hard time finding this locally. I know you can purchase it on-line, even through Amazon.com. I would also suggest asking your grocery store manager if it would be possible for the store to get it for you.

Borax: Borax is a naturally occurring mineral: Sodium Borate. It is a white powder. It’s purpose is as a laundry whitener and deodorizer. The brand to look for is 20 Mule Team. It comes in a 76 oz. box. You should be able to locate this in the laundry detergent aisle. Again as with the washing soda, if you cannot find it ask you store manager or look online.

The Recipe

Now that you have assembled all the needed ingredients here is the recipe:

Homemade Laundry Soap
1/3 bar Fels Naptha or other type of soap, as listed above
½ cup washing soda
½ cup borax powder
~You will also need a small bucket, about 2 gallon size~

Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan. Add 6 cups water and heat it until the soap melts. Add the washing soda and the borax and stir until it is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour 4 cups hot water into the bucket. Now add your soap mixture and stir. Now add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir. Let the soap sit for about 24 hours and it will gel. You use ½ cup per load.

A few things to note about the soap

The finished soap will not be a solid gel. It will be more of a watery gel that has been accurately described as an "egg noodle soup" look.

~The soap is a low sudsing soap. So if you don’t see suds, that is ok. Suds are not what does the cleaning, it is the ingredients in the soap.

Optional: If you want your soap to have some sort of scent you can scent this with ½ to 1 oz. of essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice. My favorite scent is orange essential oil.

Learn to Make Tealight Candles

Tealight candles are one of my favorites. They are easy to make and are perfect for use on any occasion. Just the thing you need to make your bubble bath complete or for setting the mood at a garden party.

These tealight cups are made of aluminum and are easy to bend so be careful when handling them.

Place a pre-tabbed wick in the center of each of the tealight cups. *Tip*Since I make a batch at a time, I find it easier if I put tealight cups in a box lid (from a shoe box is fine) prior to pouring in the wax. Any overflows are kept within the lid, keeping your workspace clean.
Melt the amount of wax you need to make these tealight candles. Scoop up some of the melted wax with a stainless steel measuring cup, hold the funnel over the tealight cup and pour wax through the funnel into the cup until it is almost level with the edges of the cup. Using a funnel allows you to pour the wax into the cups in a neater, cleaner way without the risk of burning yourself while pouring.
Continue filling the tealight cups until you have the number of tealights you wanted to make. Let cool completely until the wax has hardened. The wax may shrink when it is completely cooled so you may need to top up your candles to make them level once again. Let cool again until the additional wax is hard. Do not remove the tealights from their aluminum container when you are ready to burn these candles.

Candle Crafts

Candles are attractive and special on their own but when you combine them with some of the elements listed below you can create a unique decoration for your home or for sale. If your candles are part of a larger project, remember to keep color scemes and scents in mind

Some common elements used in these candle crafts:
Hurricane lamp flute
Artificial flowers
Artificial fruit
Votive and taper candles
Household items such as baby food jars, wine glasses, large vases.

Jazz up a simple candle with artificial flowers to make these attractive wedding favors for your guests. Personalize each one with a slip of paper bearing your names, the date of your wedding and a special message.

Match the colors of the glass beads and the candle to the main colors being used in your wedding. Guests will love to take one of these home as a souvenir. Give them away during the reception by placing something under one of the chairs at each table. Make sure the winner empties the water before they take the centerpiece home (it'll be easier and less messy).

Learn To Use A Candle Mold

This candle mold is different from other molds because you have to pour the candle wax in the mold from the bottom, to make sure you are filling it completely due to it's unusual shape. The head of the turtle shape is off to one side and taller than the rest of the mold so if you pour your wax from the top, the head will not be completely filled.

Melt the wax you will need to make your candle.
Coat the inside of the mold with a thin layer of mold release spray or cooking spray. Cut a piece of wick that extends about 1 inch past the top and the bottom of the mold.Insert the wick in between the two sides of the mold making sure it is centered. Tape up three sides of the mold leaving the bottom side (with the opening where you will pour in the wax), free. Make sure the markers on the mold are lined up and snuggly fit into each other. Your wick should still be centered after you have taped up the mold.
Insert the mold upside down into the stand making sure the sides are held firmly in place. Adjust the vertical portions of the stand if necessary.

Candle Wax

Before I begin I wanted to mention a few things. Candle Wax melting point and flashpoint can vary by manufacturer and batch, so always read the manufacturers information supplied with your wax when purchasing.

There are also different types of wax within each group, so for instance, you can buy several types of paraffin wax with different melting points. If candles are going into a warm room or into a higher temperature climate, the higher the melting point the longer your candle will last. When adding coloration and/or fragrances, the melting point of your wax will change since the wax is no longer pure; so make sure to ask what the effects are prior to purchasing.

Paraffin Candle Wax
Paraffin is a petroleum based candle wax. It tends to be less expensive than other forms of wax and comes in chunks or powder form. You can buy the wax precolored or you can buy the wax in a neutral color and your own color. This is the most popular type of candle wax used.
Of interest - Candle wax is rocket science: Paraffin fuels test launch
http://news-service.stanford.edu/news/2003/november5/rocketwax-115.html
Beeswax
Beeswax Candle wax is made from the wax bees use in their hives. Beeswax can be bought in several forms including flat & honeycomb sheets, blocks, chunks and pearls. In most cases the sheets can be bought precolored, while the chunks, blocks and pearls tend to come in their natural color. Beeswax is naturally aromatic, so it is rare that one would add fragrance.
The wax is quite sticky, and has a low melting point. When one is making candles from the sheets, the heat from your hand will make the wax pliable and easy to roll.
If you are using pure beeswax in candle molds or containers, you should consider adding a candle hardener and also be prepared to top up your molds since the wax tends to shrink quite a bit when cooling. Beeswax tends to be more expensive than paraffin wax, and you tend to get a lot of variation in color and melting point between waxes, but don't let that stop you.
Bayberry Candle Wax
Bayberry candle wax was discovered by early American colonists who were looking for an alternative to tallow, which gave off tons of soot, air pollutants and a somewhat unpleasant smell. Bayberry candle wax comes from the bayberry shrub which produces very decorative bluish grey tinged berries. There are two types of Bayberry shrubs, the Northern Bayberry (Myrica Pensylvanica) and Southern Bayberry (Myrica cerifera), both which produce the berries.
There is no need to add fragrances or coloration since this wax is naturally aromatic, and dries to a very nice olive green color. Its only drawback is that it is quite expensive since it takes anywhere from 3-15 pounds of bayberries to make 1 lb of wax, depending on growing conditions such as moisture availablity.
Soy Wax
Soy candle wax is one of the newest candle waxes out there. It is becoming popular because it is a renewable resource, biodegradable, can be melted in the microwave, and it is great for North American farmers. The wax is very soft, so you will either want to use it in a container candle, add lots of hardener and use either a larger wick or paper-cored wick.
When making your candles, you will notice quite a bit of shrinkage as it cools so you will need to add a bit more wax to level off the top. The finished candles are creamy in color.
I have seen many claims that this wax burns cleaner, with reduced carbon build up, has no pollutants and less likely to trigger allergies. While these claims are nice, I have a feeling that this is more marketing spin rather than based on hard facts since I have not been able to find any reliable third party research that has been conducted to back it up. I have contacted several candle making organizations to find out the information and am waiting for a response. When I get the information, I will update this article.
Wax Crystals
Wax crystals tend to be made from paraffin wax but I thought that I would treat this as a separate wax since no heating is required (but can be if you are making molds etc.) and thus perfect for children. The wax as the name implies comes in crystal form and can be bought in bags of various sizes at your local craft shop. The wax is premixed with color and hardeners, and prepackaged treated wicks are usually available. One of the most well known brand is Candle Magic.
Gel Wax
Gel Candle wax is used in those candles where you see bubbles within the wax. Click here to see an example. Gel candle wax is made from a combination of processed mineral oil and a gelling agent. It is clear and has a rubbery texture, but when scooping it out it, it looks somewhat like hair gel.
Gel wax candles are one of the most dangerous types of candle to make because you will find it very difficult to heat in a double boiler to reach its melting point. In every case I have had to place the wax in a pot on direct heat in order to melt it. You can't take your eyes off of this wax for a second and must closely monitor the temperature of the wax. If you reach the flashpoint you are in for an explosive surprise, so the best thing to do is start off heating it on the lowest setting and slowly increase the temperature to reach your desired heat. The longer you heat the wax, the less bubbles you get.
**I do not recommend adding any fragrances or coloration since they affect the melting point and flashpoint.
Jelly Candle Wax
This is another simple wax for kids to use. It looks and feels exactly like hair gel and comes in squeezable tubes. They come pre colored and pre scented. I use them in tealights.
Starburst Wax
I don't recommend this wax for beginners since it is used for decorating your candle rather than as the prime ingredient. Lots of testing is required! Once you have made your candle and let it completely cooled (don't trim the wick yet because you need to hold onto it hold onto it) , dip your candle into the melted starburst wax quickly and watch snowflake like patterns appear. The wax is fairly expensive but a little goes a long way since it is used as a coating.
Microcrystalline Wax
This is an additive for candle wax to add rigidity to tapers, help wax adhere to the walls of the container, and reduce or eliminate mottling in pillars.

Candle Making Procedures

As many experienced candle makers know, you have to test a lot before perfecting your candles. Many beginners get discouraged when they make candles the first few times and they don't get the results they hope to achieve. Follow the candle making procedures below to get the most out of your testing.

One of the first mistakes beginners make is they don't keep track of their tests. The easiest way is to keep a log book and include the following information:
• The manufacturer of each and every product you use including the wax, fragrances, dyes, pigments, wicks, wick holders, containers and any additives used.• The amounts of each product you used and take note when you added it during the candle making process.
• Track the cooling time.
• Take note of any imperfections once the candle has completely cooled and prior to burning including cracks, air bubbles, discoloration, white lines, wells, flakes etc.
• Is the coloring of the candle what you expected and is it consistent throughout the candle?
• Note the fragrance of the candle prior to burning. Is the scent appealing, subtle or overpowering?
• Track the burn time
• Note the fragrance of the candle during burning. Is it too light, overwhelming or is it perfect? You may find that the candles smell quite strong when you are making them and once set, but may be much lighter smelling while burning.
• Look at the flame and see if it is too big, too small, gets drowned by the wax or smokes.
The second mistake beginners make is making a huge batch when testing.
• When testing make smaller batches. If your test was unsuccessful, it will save you having a load of leftover wax and save you a pile of money in wasted supplies.
The third mistake beginner’s make is they think that what they like is what everyone else likes too.
Some people like really strong smells and certain colors. If you are intending on selling your candles, you have to ask yourself is this what other people will like? Ask some friends to come over and let you know what they think while testing. Let them see your examples and request that they smell them prior to burning, ask them what they think of the colors, and then light your candle and ask them what they think of the fragrance. Make sure to add this to your logs!

Candle Making Safety

While some of these safety tips seem fairly obvious, it is amazing how many homes are burned down and how many people are injured as a result of improper candlemaking and candle burning.

Don't leave melting candle wax unattended.
If you are using your stove at home, give it a good cleaning before you make your candles. Ensure the little drip trays beneath the rings are clean since they tend to collect grease. If you have a wax fire, the last thing you need is any grease catching fire to aggravate the situation. After you are finished the candle making process clean your stove again, making sure you have removed all of the wax from your stove.
Keep any flammable materials away from your work area. If you have kitchen curtains close by remove them from your windows until you are done.
Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Learn about the materials you are using including their flashpoint and melting points, and use a thermometer.
If using your stove at home, start at the low setting and work your way up until the desired temperature is reached. I found in most cases I never had to go beyond one setting above low to reach the desired melting point temperatures when using a double boiler. Never, ever set your rings at maximum!
Always use a wax melter or double boiler. Don't put wax in a pot on direct heat since heat is hard to manage and the flash point may be exceeded. Never fill a pot all the way to the top with the candle wax you are using.
Always wear protective clothing while working with hot wax. Oven gloves, a heavy apron, long pants and shirtsleeves, shoes and socks will help to protect you.
You should always work in a well ventilated area.
Always make sure your candle supplies are locked up and out of the reach of children.
If hot wax is being used keep young children away from your work area. Older children who are participating in the candle making process should always be supervised by an adult and educated on candle making safety before you begin.
Don't pour left over wax down the drain. It is bad for the environment, as it cools it will clog your sink, and you will layer your pipes with a flammable material. Pour it into a jar or milk carton and over several batches you will have made a layered candle.
For those considering selling candles
Always include a warning label.
If the candle is for decorative purposes only, make sure it is labeled as such.
FIRST AID
Keep a bucket or sink full of cold water close by. If you get some hot wax on your skin, dunk the affected area immediately into the water and leave it there until the candle wax has cooled completely . THIS WATER IS NOT TO BE USED ON A CANDLE WAX FIRE. If it is a small minor burn you can then peel off the wax. If it is a more serious second or third degree burn (blistering or charring), after dunking, leave the wax on and call your doctor or go to the hospital.
Candle Safety
Never leave burning candles unattended.
Burn candles on a level, protected surface.
Keep flammable materials well away from a burning candle... don't forget the drapes!
Keep burning candles away from open windows or drafty areas.
Don't let the candle wick smolder after blowing it out.
Always use a candle holder.
Do not place candles in high traffic areas where they can be knocked over easily.
Trim the wick to ¼ inch each time before burning.
Do not burn the candle for longer than the manufacturer recommends.
Keep matches or lighters out of the reach of children.
Make sure your house is equipped with a smoke alarm.
Some decorative items with candles are meant to be decorative only.

SOAP MAKING

SOAP MAKING

Valentine's Heart Embed Soaps

These adorable soaps will get you in the Valentine's Day spirit!
See the chunk soap tutorial for additional help with this project.
What You Will Need:
Melt & Pour Soap Base
Cherry Blossom Soap Mold (Or soap mold of your choice)
Fragrance Oil
Allura Red Liquid Colorant (Or B&B colorant of your choice)
Microwave Safe Measuring Cup
Heart Molds (We found these heart-shaped ice cube trays at the local Dollar Store)

Note: This project can be done using a baking sheet and heart-shaped cookie cutters as well. See the chunk soap tutorial for additional help.

1. Cut your soap base into chunks and heat in the microwave in 30-second increments until fully melted. Add color and fragrance as desired. Tip: For this step, we recommend using a clear soap base such as Clear Glycerine to achieve a more vibrant color and more contrast.
2. Pour the soap into the heart molds and allow to cool completely. You may wish to place the mold tray in the refrigerator to cool.

3. Once the hearts have cooled, pop them out of the molds by pressing down on the backs of the molds with your thumbs.
4. Heat the soap base you will be using for the overpour and add color and fragrance as desired. Tip: You can use a clear base with no color or an opaque base with little or no color for more contrast.
5. Place a heart in the center of the mold, flat side down. If you are using a plain mold, you can place multiple hearts throughout the mold.

6. Allow your melted soap base to cool to at least 140 degrees F to prevent the embedded heart from bleeding.

7. Slowly pour the soap base around the edges of the heart until it is completely covered.

8. Allow the soap to cool completely before attempting to remove it from the mold. You may want to place the mold in the refrigerator to speed the cooling process.
9. Pop the soaps out of the mold and enjoy!

Candle Safety Rules

Candles are safe products, but unless they are used safely and watched carefully, they can lead to an accidental fire.
More than 15,000 candle fires are reported annually. According to fire experts, the bulk of candle-fire incidents are due to consumer inattention to basic fire safety or to the misuse of candles.
The National Candle Association urges consumers to be careful when burning candles, and to following these rules for burning candles safely.
Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.
Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.
Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else.
Trim candlewicks to ¼ inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks cause uneven burning and dripping.
Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.
Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. This will also help prevent possible heat damage to counters and table surfaces and prevent glass containers from cracking or breaking.
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.
Always read and follow the manufacturer's use and safety instructions carefully. Don't burn a candle longer than the manufacturer recommends.
Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, and avoid flame flare-ups and sooting. Drafts can also blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame where they could catch fire.
Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don't burn too many candles in a small room or in a "tight" home where air exchange is limited.
Don't burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains or ½ inch if in a container.
Never touch a burning candle or move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid.
Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.
Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This is to make sure they don't melt one another, or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly.
Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle. It's the safest way to prevent hot wax from splattering.
Never extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might cause a glass container to break.
Be very careful if using candles during a power outage. Flashlights and other battery-powered lights are safer sources of light during a power failure. Never use a candle during a power outage to look for things in a closet, or when fueling equipment - such as a lantern or kerosene heater.
Make sure a candle is completely extinguished and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
Extinguish a candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high. The candle isn't burning properly and the flame isn't controlled. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, then check for drafts before re-lighting.
Never use a candle as a night light.

Tips from the Experts about Candles

Tips from the Experts

Few things are as captivating as the soft light and glow of a candle. But there's an art to burning a candle properly and safely. You can generally tell if a candle is burning properly just by looking at it. You should see:
A Calm, Steady Flame
This means that the candle's burning process is in balance. The wick is efficiently pulling up the right amount of wax, which is then being "consumed" by the flame to produce water vapor and carbon dioxide.
No Flickering or Wisps of Smoke
Constant flickering and smoking occur when the teardrop shape of the flame is disturbed. This allows small amounts of unburned carbon particles (soot) to escape from the flame as a visible wisp of smoke.

If too much (or too little) air reaches the candle flame, it will disturb the flame's teardrop shape, causing it to soot. To avoid this, always burn your candles in a well-ventilated room, away from drafts, vents or strong air currents.

No Flare Ups or Leaping Flames
A too-long wick can cause a candle flame to grow too long and flare. That's why it is so important to trim the wick to ¼ inch before every use.

Always keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and other debris that could catch fire from the flame.

If you like to group your candles, make sure they are at least 3 inches apart when burning. Candles placed too closely together can create their own draft and cause the candles to flare.

Burning a Candle Safely
Remember, a lighted candle is an open flame. Be careful. Always follow the basic rules of fire safety when burning candles:
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always keep it in your sight.
Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire.
Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
Always use an appropriate candleholder and place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Read the label and follow the manufacturer's use and safety instructions carefully.
Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each use.
Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, but away from drafts and air currents.
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.
Extinguish any candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high. Cool, trim the wick, check for drafts, and re-light.
Don't allow the flame to come too close to the holder or container.
For a margin of safety, discontinue using a candle when it is within 2 inches of the holder or ½ inch of the container bottom.
Never move a lighted candle, and never move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid.
Extinguish a pillar candle if the wax pool approaches the outer edge.
Place lighted candles at least 3 inches apart.

Types of Candles

Popular Candle Types

Candles come in virtually every shape and size imaginable. The following terms are used to describe common candle styles.

TAPER: A slender candle – typically 6 to 18 inches high and sometimes called a dinner candle – designed to be held securely upright by a candle holder.

PILLAR: A free-standing candle, usually having a diameter of 3 inches or more, and one or more wicks. Despite the name, pillars or column candles can be round, square, hexagonal, etc. Although they stand on their own, they must be burned on a heat-resistant candle holder.

CONTAINER, JAR OR FILLED CANDLE: A candle that is poured when manufactured into a glass, metal or ceramic container specifically designed to hold the wax and withstand the heat of the burning candle.

VOTIVE: A small cylindrical candle, usually about 1½ inches in diameter and 2 or 2½ inches high, designed to be placed in a "cup" or votive holder to hold the liquefied wax that results from burning. Votives were originally produced as white unscented candles for religious ceremonies; they are now available in many colors and scents.

GEL CANDLE: A transparent-type candle made primarily from gelled mineral oils or gelled synthetic hydrocarbons. “Soft” or quasi-rigid gels are poured into a container to maintain the candle’s shape. "Hard" gel candles have a consistency suitable for free-standing candles.Decorative wax items are frequently suspended within a gel candle to produce a special visual effect.

TEALIGHT: A small, cylindrical, filled candle -- usually about 1 inch in diameter and 1½ inches high -- often poured into a metal holder.

LUMINARIA: An outdoor candle made by placing a 15-hour votive in a light-diffusing container filled with sand.

SPECIALTY CANDLE: An unusually shaped or sculpted free-standing candle, often depicting a three-dimensional object or designed to be viewed primarily as decorative artwork, and sometimes called a novelty candle.
